I want to sincerely thank everyone here for providing Coffee with such exceptional care and support. She was diagnosed with IVDD, and the team acted quickly to perform surgery. We drove over two hours from the city to get here, and from the moment we arrived, we felt reassured that Coffee was in the right hands. Dr. Chapman was our primary doctor and surgeon. She was incredibly informative, patient, and compassionate, and she made us feel at ease throughout the entire process. The surgery was successful, and we are hopeful to see Coffee walking on her own again soon. Dr. Chapman also remained in communication with us after the surgery, which meant so much during such a stressful time. Dr. Arendt was also extremely kind and attentive. She spoke so warmly about Coffee, and it was clear how genuinely cared for she was. That reassurance made a difficult experience much easier to navigate. We are deeply grateful to the entire team for their kindness, expertise, and, most importantly, their empathy. Thank you for taking such wonderful care of our dog. 💕

Penn Vet LITERALLY saved Jalen’s life, and I could not be more grateful. Jalen developed severe pneumonia as a complication from kennel cough that progressed into multiple organ system failure. His case was so complex that no one could give me a real estimate of his chance of survival, only that it was slim. Research after the fact, on my own showed that everything he went through put him at a 12% chance of survival. We were literally taking everything one hour at a time. What happened with Jalen was extraordinarily rare, occurring in less than 0.01% of dogs, and is something that rarely sees a positive outcome. Jalen was transported to Penn after developing a pneumomediastinum due to his severe pneumonia. Upon arrival, he was rushed into emergency surgery. That is when I first met with Dr Tarbutton and she explained to me the severity of the situation and was very transparent, yet empathetic the entire time. She did not make any promises but explained that despite their best doctors ready to work on him, it was an “all hands-on deck” situation. He made it through the surgery, but I was called to “say goodbye” since he required mechanical ventilation after the fact, and only 30% of dogs who go on a ventilator ever come off. I was only able to visit for a few minutes; it was the hardest almost goodbye of my life. I was able to visit Jalen daily. The Critical Care staff was so patient, understanding, and caring. They updated me by phone twice per day and were sure to explain exactly what was being done and why. They answered all my questions and never rushed or dismissed me. After 36 hours, he was able to come off the vent, defying his first set of odds! He was off the vent, but his status was guarded. He was critically ill, and the staff was careful to keep me aware that the situation was touch and go at best. I appreciated their candor, as sometimes it is easy to lose sight of how severe a situation really is. He was treated with several antibiotics, as the pneumonia appeared to be antibiotic resistant, was on high flow oxygen, and several other medications to keep him comfortable. He remained in the critical care unit for a total of 7 days. Each day, it felt like we took 2 steps forward and 1 step back. He survived emergency surgery, ventilation, and the pneumonia began to improve, however each day he developed something new, as is often the case with multiple system failure. He developed a blood clot in his back leg, pressure sores from being sedentary for so long, and a heart arrythmia. But every step of the way, the critical care team had a plan and kept me informed. After 7 days, it was decided that he was going to be sent home. He was breathing normally, and his secondary issues were not enough to keep him in the hospital. A 7 day stay in the critical care unit with emergency surgery and mechanical ventilation is not cheap, and he was stressed from being out of his environment, so it was thought best by everyone that he be treated at home and as an outpatient. The staff kept me informed of the updated total cost of care each day, so there were no surprises at discharge. I was terrified when he came home and called and emailed more times than necessary over the next few days, but the staff was always helpful and patient, never making me feel like I was being too much. Over the next few weeks, he was seen as an outpatient by the critical care team, internal medicine, surgery, and cardiology teams. He was put on anticoagulants, underwent debridement surgery for his wounds, ultrasounds for the clot in his leg, and overall checkups. Each time he visited, he looked better and better. And now, after 7 weeks, all that remains of his ordeal is a scar on his chest where his pressure wounds used to be. Truly miraculous. Jalen fought for his life with the help of the extremely skilled doctors at Penn Vet. I truly believe that he would not have survived had gone anywhere else. His case is truly rare and miraculous. I cannot thank and praise everyone involved in his care enough, you all helped save my best friend!

I took my dog (Frenchie/Boston mix) here to get a large spot in his eye checked out. The ophthalmology team that saw him was spectacular. They were so sweet to my dog, so thorough and yet quick (they clearly know what they're doing), and explained everything about what turned out to be a cyst to me. Their explanation was scientific, detailed, and yet simple enough for me to understand, and reassured me that it was not a cause for concern (and explained why!). I feel like we got the best care possible and I feel confident and comfortable in understanding more about my dog's health. Thank you Penn Vet!

Can’t thank the Penn Vet staff enough. Took my cat Frank in to be seen for some issues and he was handled with care and we were given a solid assessment of his illness. The student and Dr who assisted us throughout the day were some of the most friendly and caring people I’ve met. You can tell they really care about your animal and want them to feel better.

0 stars if that were possible. $6,000 later and we still have no answers. Follow-up has been painfully slow, bordering on nonexistent, after charging what amounts to three months’ rent in a city where the median income is around $60k. Getting updates is nearly impossible. You can’t call for guidance you’re told to email the doctor, but then the resident doesn’t have time to respond to emails. We’ve had to call repeatedly just to get basic information about our own cat. We specifically requested an ultrasound. Instead, our cat was taken for a battery of additional tests that we did not ask with a bunch of scripted word soup to justify additional diagnostics that are likely just teaching opportunities for the happy students that patrol the halls. Despite all of these expensive, unnecessary tests, we were still left without answers and without proactive follow-up. The lack of accountability is astounding. Once they’ve taken your money, there seems to be very little urgency to communicate, guide, or support you through next steps. This being a “teaching hospital” does not justify poor communication or financial overreach. It feels like they prey on people who deeply love their pets, using Penn’s reputation and access to expensive machinery as justification, while we are left confused and stressed for our pets safety and ensuring we have enough money to eat after the required upfront payments and no payment plans they offer. Does this sound like a scam or vet? You tell me. Extremely disappointed. Would not recommend to my worst enemy.
