Frequently asked questions

What types of conditions are considered a pet emergency at South Metro Animal Emergency Care?
A pet emergency is any sudden change in a pet's health or behavior that could be life-threatening or cause serious pain if not treated right away. Common examples include trouble breathing, collapse, seizures, severe vomiting or diarrhea, a bloated abdomen, major trauma, ingestion of toxins, difficulty urinating, or sudden eye injuries.
When should a pet owner choose an emergency animal hospital over their regular veterinarian?
Pet owners should visit an emergency animal hospital when their pet needs urgent care outside normal business hours or when their condition is too serious to wait for a regular appointment. This includes symptoms that worsen quickly, severe pain, difficulty breathing, possible poisoning, heatstroke, severe allergic reactions, or complications after surgery.
Is an appointment required for emergency care at South Metro Animal Emergency Care?
For emergencies, no appointment is needed, and the emergency team accepts walk-ins during their open hours. However, if it is safe to do so, calling ahead can help the team prepare for the pet's arrival, especially in severe or time-sensitive cases.
How does South Metro Animal Emergency Care coordinate with a pet's primary veterinarian?
The emergency doctors at South Metro Animal Emergency Care work closely with primary care veterinarians. They share records, test results, and treatment plans to ensure that a pet's care remains continuous and coordinated between the emergency facility and the family veterinarian.
What steps should a referring veterinarian follow to transfer a case to South Metro Animal Emergency Care?
Referring veterinarians should first contact the on-duty doctor at South Metro for a doctor-to-doctor call to review the case and confirm acceptance. After acceptance, the client should be informed of the next steps. All relevant medical records, such as radiographs, lab results, and notes, should then be emailed to sme@lakefieldvet.com.
