Frequently asked questions
- What type of veterinary specialty care does Veterinary Cardiopulmonary Care Center provide?
- Veterinary Cardiopulmonary Care Center is a specialty care center devoted exclusively to veterinary cardiology and pulmonary medicine. It provides complete diagnostic and therapeutic care for companion pets with heart and/or lung disease, led by board-certified veterinary cardiologists. These specialists have extensive training and have passed rigorous testing with the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.
- Why might a pet owner be referred to Veterinary Cardiopulmonary Care Center?
- Pet owners are typically referred by their primary veterinarian due to concerns such as a heart murmur, a possible enlarged heart, or an elevated proBNP test. Seeing a board-certified veterinary cardiologist allows for specialized examination and diagnostic testing to determine the type, severity, and appropriate treatment for heart disease.
- Does Veterinary Cardiopulmonary Care Center handle cardiac emergencies?
- Yes, the center is available to help with cardiac emergencies. If a pet is in an urgent state, owners are advised to call the office immediately. The staff will then guide them to the most suitable location for immediate attention and provide necessary urgent care upon evaluation.
- What advanced echocardiography equipment does the clinic use?
- The clinic utilizes advanced veterinary echocardiography equipment from Philips, including the Philips iE33, Philips EPIQ 5, and the portable Philips CX50 ultrasound machines. These systems incorporate color Doppler and spectral Doppler technology to evaluate heart structure and function.
- What symptoms might indicate a pet has a heart problem?
- Symptoms in dogs can include a cough, trouble breathing, weakness, exercise intolerance, or fainting. Cats might hide more, show increased respiratory effort, faint, or experience a sudden onset of forelimb lameness or hind limb paralysis. An abnormal heart sound like a gallop or murmur heard during a routine exam can also be an indicator.
