This is a field with more marketing than evidence, so here is the honest version.
What PRP is
Blood is drawn from your own dog, spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, and the resulting plasma is injected into the affected joint or tendon — usually the same visit, often within an hour.
Platelets carry growth factors involved in tissue repair and in modulating inflammation. The idea is to deliver a concentrated dose of those signals directly where they are needed.
Because it is autologous — the pet's own blood — there is no rejection risk and the safety profile is good. That much is not controversial.
Does it actually work?
For canine osteoarthritis, the evidence is genuinely positive but more modest than the marketing suggests.
Several controlled studies in dogs with elbow and hip osteoarthritis have shown improvement in lameness scores, owner-assessed comfort and force-plate measurements, with benefit lasting on the order of months rather than weeks. That is a real result and worth having.
What the evidence does not support:
- That it regenerates cartilage or reverses arthritis. It modulates inflammation and may improve the joint environment; it does not rebuild a worn joint.
- That it outperforms established treatments. Weight management and NSAIDs have a stronger evidence base than PRP does, and any honest plan starts there.
- That "PRP" is one standardised thing. Preparation systems differ substantially in platelet concentration, white cell content and activation method, and results from one system do not automatically transfer to another. Ask which system your clinic uses.
For tendon and ligament injuries the veterinary evidence is thinner still — promising, extrapolated substantially from human sports medicine, not settled.
PRP or stem cells?
Owners are often offered both, and the distinction is rarely explained clearly.
PRP is a concentrate of your dog's own platelets, prepared in under an hour, from a simple blood draw. Cheaper, simpler, no surgical step.
[Stem cell therapy](/procedures/stem-cell-therapy/) usually means harvesting fat under anaesthetic, processing it to isolate mesenchymal stem cells, and injecting those — sometimes with PRP alongside. More involved, more expensive, and it requires a minor surgical procedure.
Both sit in the same category: regenerative treatments with encouraging but incomplete evidence, used mainly for osteoarthritis. If cost matters and you want to try this class of treatment, PRP is the lower-commitment entry point.
When PRP is the wrong answer
This is the part that saves owners money.
If the joint problem is mechanical, an injection treats the smoke and leaves the fire. A dog with an unstable cruciate ligament, a luxating patella, a fragmented coronoid process or a torn meniscus has a structural problem. PRP may reduce inflammation temporarily; the instability continues damaging the joint throughout.
An owner told an injection will fix a torn cruciate is being misled. Ask directly whether the joint is mechanically stable, and if it is not, ask why surgery is not being recommended first.
PRP is also not appropriate where there is infection in or near the joint, cancer at the site, or a bleeding disorder.
What to expect
- A single visit, usually two to four hours: blood draw, processing, sedation, injection
- Sedation or light anaesthesia, since accurate placement in a joint matters
- Mild soreness for one to three days afterwards, which is common and expected
- Improvement over two to six weeks, not immediately
- Rest for a week or two, then a graded return to activity
- Protocols vary — some use a single injection, others a series of two or three spaced weeks apart
Your vet may ask you to pause NSAIDs or steroids beforehand, since these may blunt the response.
How to use it well
PRP works best as one component of a plan, not a replacement for one:
- Weight. The single most effective intervention in canine osteoarthritis, by a wide margin, and it is free.
- Controlled exercise. Regular, moderate, low-impact — not weekend bursts.

- Medication. NSAIDs and newer options remain the best-supported pharmacological treatments.
- Joint supplements and diet. Modest effects, low risk.
Used that way — for a dog whose joint is stable, whose weight is managed, and where medication alone is not enough or is poorly tolerated — PRP is a reasonable addition with a good safety record. Used as a substitute for surgery or for weight loss, it disappoints.
